Why photography is a fantastic hobby

Why choose photography as a hobby?

Photography is more than just taking a picture. For some people it is like seeing the world differently, a way of recording wildlife wonders in ways that do them justice. For others it is a gallery of memories, priceless to each individual. The dictionary defines photography as an art, but in truth, it is so much more. I see photography as a pathway to individual freedom, the camera never lies!

Many people enjoy the freedom that can be found in holding a camera or the places that it can take you. Anyone of any age of any level with any camera can enjoy this simple but satisfying hobby.

It helps to relieve stress and can improve your Health

Not only does photography allow you to express yourself, but it also helps bring focus to positive life experiences, increases self-worth, and even reduces stress. It turns out that being a photographer gives you a perspective in more ways than one. The whole process of shooting, from choosing a subject to discovering new angles that take advantage of the light, requires focus. This very process of observing draws you into a peaceful state. This state of mind is not only good for our mental health, it’s also often where we photographers do our best creative work. In this sense, photography isn’t just like mindfulness, it is mindfulness.

You can connect with new people

If you do portrait, product or event work, you’ll always be meeting new clients. Local photography groups are another great way to meet other people and make friends. Photography can transform someone’s life. For example, taking a beautiful portrait of a subject with low self-esteem can change how they see themselves. It’s a wonderful thing when your photography can help improve the lives of others, not just yourself.

Anyone can do it

You can be of any age, of any ability and you don’t need an expensive camera; you could even use your smartphone! There are many fun ways to learn about composition, light, exposure and editing that are both educational and fun. No matter what age or level, anyone can challenge themselves in endless different ways. There is no shortage of new techniques, genres, projects, equipment, inspiration, and workshops.

It helps you to stay in the moment

Photography make you so much more observant of the wonderful little things that we miss every day, surrounding us. You notice things that you can use in your photos and see things that you would normally miss. It can increase your attention span and let you appreciate things that you wouldn’t usually notice. It also creates numerous opportunities and adventure, what better a way to stay in the moment by living in the moment.

Usually when you think of mindfulness, you imagine yoga or meditation. When you think about it, it’s no different from photography. It encourages a state of attentiveness to your surroundings. Whenever you bring awareness to your own senses, you are being deliberately mindful.
